Couples Resorts – 4 All Inclusive Resorts in Jamaica

When Abe Issa bought the Tower Isle Hotel back in 1949, he didn’t realize what he started. Considered the Father of Jamaican Tourism, in 1978 he rebranded the property as Couples Ocho Rios, and made it the first all-inclusive resort in Jamaica. The Issa family still owns the Couples Resorts chain, which has grown to include 4 properties- two in Negril and two in Ocho Rios. Despite their success, they’ve managed to stay true to their Jamaican roots and create the perfect combination of Jamaican style and luxury.

Couples Swept Away
312 rooms, 6 restaurants, 7 bars, 3 pools

Jeff Herron Photography, Inc.

This tranquil resort offers a refreshing and relaxing vacation where you can recharge your body and soul. Located on Negril’s famous 7-mile beach, CSA offers breathtaking sunsets and long walks on the beach. Lush tropical gardens line the paths between the buildings, and the sounds of tree frogs and crickets soothe you at night. If you get tired of lounging, there’s also the huge sports complex and wide arrange of activities to keep you active.

Unique inclusions- Shuttle to Margaritaville, golf greens fees and transfers, sunset catamaran cruises, intro to Scuba diving, snorkeling trips, water-skiing, and shuttles to a popular sunset bar.

Couples Negril
234 rooms, 5 restaurants, 5 bars, 2 pools

Jeff Herron Photography, Inc.

This resort has an eclectic style and lively atmosphere. Located on Negril’s calm Bloody Bay Beach, this resort also offers amazing sunsets and long walks on the beach. Tons of activities are available, including watersports, tennis, yoga, kick boxing, volleyball, dance classes, and of course, the included off-site excursions. Couples Resorts calls this a “beachfront playground”, so you’ll definitely have some fun!

Unique inclusions- Shuttles to Margaritaville, shopping trips, golf greens fees and transfers, sunset catamaran cruises, intro to Suba diving, snorkeling trips, water-skiing, shuttles to a popular sunset bar, and glass-bottomed boat rides.

Couples Tower Isle
226 rooms, 6 restaurants, room service, 4 bars, 4 pools

Jeff Herron Photography, Inc.

This glamourous resort features a private beach, a private island, and chic contemporary décor. Located in Ocho Rios, this resort is named after the au-natural private island, Tower Isle (yes, a naked island).  Boats will take you back and forth, or you can stay clothed on the mainland. This resort does not have good sunset views and is about 2 hours from the airport, but it’s worth it!!

Unique inclusions- Dunn’s River Falls tours, shuttle to Margaritaville, golf greens fees and transfers, catamaran cruises, intro to Scuba diving, room service, snorkeling trips, water-skiing, glass-bottom boat rides, and shopping trips.

Couples Sans Souci
150 suites, 4 restaurants, 5 bars, 4 pools

Jeff Herron Photography, Inc.

Built into a hillside in Ocho Rios, this resort ensures relaxation (and exercise, due to the abundance of stairs). The décor is old-world colonial style with a modern twist, perfect for a romantic getaway. You can soak in the natural mineral springs, explore the secluded stone paths, or if you’re brave, venture to the other side of the “hedges” to their nude beach. Don’t worry, there’s also a clothing-required beach if you’re feeling less adventurous!

Unique inclusions- Dunn’s River Falls Tour, intro to Scuba diving, snorkeling trips, water-skiing, golf greens fees and transfers, shopping shuttles, shuttles to Margaritaville, glass-bottom boat rides, and room service.

Guestzillas

5.7.-Wedding-Photos-Make-Godzilla-Angry

We’ve all heard of bridezillas, but we encountered something different with a client in August…her guests almost ruined her destination wedding!

First, let me explain how a typical destination wedding is organized. It begins when the wedding couple contacts us and we start to figure out the details- dates, location, resort, number of rooms to reserve, etc. Then, the guests are invited, notified of the details, and given our contact information to book. Usually we handle these bookings as a group, which allows for extra discounts and special offers. The bride estimates the number of rooms that will be needed, and we reserve them in advance with a deposit- as guests contact us to book, the rooms fill up and whatever is left over by the deadline is released back into the market. A few may book through other sources, but most follow the bride’s suggestions. It’s usually a very easy process…

Our bride started her planning about a year in advance, and everything seemed normal at first. Most of her guests booked through us, but the best man, a few friends, and some of the groom’s family said they had booked elsewhere online. The group booking deadline passed, the extra reserved rooms were released, and everything seemed fine- until a month before the wedding. One by one, those guests that had said they booked elsewhere contacted us- to book their trips, which they hadn’t actually done yet!!!! Unfortunately at this point, the resort was completely sold out- and so were the resorts next door. The bride and groom had been lied to, and weren’t very happy. Guests started contacting them in a panic- adding more stress in the weeks leading up to the wedding. With only two nearby hotels being available, they either had to choose a very expensive resort or a 3-star family-friendly and then take a cab to the resort for the wedding. On top of that- resorts charge extra for wedding guests that aren’t staying at the resort!

In the end, the best man didn’t show, and his 20+ year friendship with the groom never recovered. The other guests and family were divided between the 5-star and 3-star resorts, and the bride made those guests pay for their own transportation and admission to the wedding. On top of that, had these guests simply booked with us before the deadline, the bride and groom would have had enough rooms to qualify for several wedding upgrades and the guests would have gotten discounted rates. Fortunately, the bride and groom were able to get past the drama and have an amazing wedding by focusing on what’s important- their love and marriage.

We doubt most guests would be this clueless, but just in case, let your guests know the benefits of booking as a group through a travel agent.

  • Reduced room rates
  • Special dinners and receptions may be offered, but only to guests that booked within the group. Anyone who booked elsewhere will not be invited.
  • The bride and groom get room upgrades, free private receptions, spa services and other special offers based on the number of rooms booked by the group, and may even get a free stay. Think of it like an extra wedding gift you give just by booking with the group.
  • The bride and groom get updates and information about who has booked, saving them from having to coordinate and double-check their guests’ plans. They have enough stress!

If you have a guestzilla story- share it in the comments below. Your experiences can help other brides and grooms!

Secrets, Dreams, Sunscape, and Zoetry Resorts In Cancun- Reviews

I had the pleasure of getting to see all of the AM Resorts brands in the Cancun area recently, which include Secrets, Now, Dreams, Zoetry, and Suncape. We didn’t have long at each resort, so these are simply superficial observations. 14 resorts in 4 days – here are my quick summaries of each!

Secrets The Vine

Untitled-1

Secrets The Vine is right on the Cancun strip. This resort is modern, posh, and makes you feel like a movie star. It’s a metropolitan-style high-rise so there’s not much greenery, but I didn’t miss it. The service is amazing, the food was delicious, and the layout is just cool. Since it’s located on such a small piece of land, the pools and outdoor areas are terraced, making it feel much bigger than it is. It’s very active and there were people lounging, swimming, and drinking – it kept reminding me of a swanky Miami hotel party. I was lucky enough to stay on the 27th floor in the Preferred Club – and the view of the strip was amazing. I would recommend the Preferred Club at this hotel especially, not only for the better views, but because there is an awesome Preferred Club lounge and private pool off the 12th floor. It was really cool chilling in a quiet rooftop infinity pool while looking down at all the guests at the regular pools below. Overall, I enjoyed this resort much more than I expected!

Dreams Sands Cancun

DRESC_Aerial_1

This resort officially opened on September 1st, 2014 after it was bought and remodeled by AM resorts. We visited 6 days prior, while they were still putting on the finishing touches. Located in the bustling hotel zone of Cancun, this is a family-friendly high-rise resort with nice pool areas and a moderate beach. Since the resort is relatively small, it would be a good choice for a quick family getaway or as a “home base” for exploring all the activities that Cancun has to offer.

Secrets Playa Mujeres

SECPM_SigShot_1

This resort will officially open in November of 2014, but we got to see it under construction – and it was AMAZING!! It’s big and beautiful, and only 10 minutes north of Cancun. All the rooms will be suites, and it just feels luxurious – even during construction. Located in an upscale private community, this resort has two main areas which sandwich an avian wildlife reserve. The reception area is up on a small hill and includes restaurants and activities. From there, you can see the avian reserve and the second area where the rooms, pool and beach are located. Keep your eye out for all the little elegant details – those decorative pebble borders on every sidewalk were done by hand (I saw it)! This sophisticated resort is sure be a star!

Zoetry Paraiso da la Bonita

ZOPDB_Aerial_2

Zoetry Paraiso de la Bonita is an all-ages AAA Five Diamond luxury resort south of Cancun in the Riviera Maya. Since children must pay the full rate and there are no kids’ activities, there are rarely children on property. This is a typically quiet, sophisticated spa resort for high-end clients to escape the stress of daily life. Gourmet food, top-shelf alcohol, large luxurious suites and the pristine white-sand beach make this resort extraordinary. The resort décor is hard to describe – combining Mexican artwork with natural wood and stone accents to create a sort of rustic Mexican elegance. They even have Mayan spiritual cleansing rituals on a weekly basis. If you’re looking for a quiet high-end retreat with an elegant Mexican flair, this is your resort.

Secrets Silversands

SESRC_Aerial2_Year2013_1B

Secrets Silversands is a AAA Four Diamond resort with clean, modern indoor spaces and large open outdoor spaces. Their website describes it as a combination of “style, sexiness and sophistication” – and they’re right. This adults-only resort achieves luxury without trying too hard. Clean lines and neutral colors dominate, with the quality of the design, materials, and craftsmanship really shining through. The beach and pools are gorgeous, and the whole place just seems effortlessly cool. This is a very versatile resort that could satisfy a wide variety of travelers, making it a great option for an adults-only destination wedding!

Now Sapphire

NOSRC_Aerial3_2

For an all-ages resort, Now Sapphire is not what you’d expect. This AAA Four Diamond resort is pure tropical luxury. Natural stone and wood accents, soothing water features, thatched roofs, and lush greenery combine with elegant European architecture to create a uniquely beautiful property. The common areas, pools, and restaurants are all near each other on one side of the resort, with the rooms taking up the other half of the resort. This gives the two sides of the resort different ambiances – the room side being a little quieter, and the pool side being more active. This resort has something for everyone and would be a great choice for multi-age group travel or a destination wedding.

Dreams Riviera Cancun

DRERC_AERIAL2_1

Dreams Riviera Cancun makes a big first impression, the over-sized lobby with towering wood ceilings and elegant columns looks like you’ve entered a Southeast Asian palace. The lobby leads you to gorgeous wood walkways and the pool area- which is in the middle of the resort. It’s impressive too- three large curved pools with lots of open room for lounging in between, with the room buildings on either side. Since the resort is very open and centered around the pool areas, it has a very active feel and there aren’t many quiet areas. If you’re with your family or a group, this makes it very easy to find members of your party without having to walk around much. Even though it’s a family-friendly resort, it somehow manages to feel glamorous- so parents and children alike would love it.

Dreams Tulum

DRETU_Aerial_5

I try not to play favorites- but this resort stole my heart, and most of the other travel agents agreed. I do not have children, and I am yearning to stay at this family-friendly resort! It’s very large with many different sections, so there is a lot of walking involved- but it’s worth it. At most resorts, you can’t tell what country you’re in- not at Dreams Tulum. They are proud of Mexico and show it in the architecture, art, and fountains around the property. The pool area is adjacent to the beach, and is bright, open, and active. Heading away from the beach is quieter with beautiful stone walkways that wander through arches, gardens and courtyards- leading to the rooms. There are so many little touches that help make this resort special- you really have to see it for yourself. On top of the physical beauty of the resort, they take great care of their staff too. They have a foundation that pays for employees’ children to go to college and a little shopping area where employees have opened their own businesses. When you experience something special you can just feel it- and Dreams Tulum is it.

Dreams Puerto Aventuras

drepc_ext_beach_1

Dolphins! Dreams Puerto Aventuras is the location of Dolphin Dreams Dophinarium, where you can swim with dolphins and manatees! This amazing facility is part of the resort, so even if you don’t want to participate, you can still enjoy watching the dolphins play and interact. The resort is a little awkwardly laid out, with the rooms building in the middle, pool and common areas to either side, and restaurants scattered everywhere. For adults, there’s a gorgeous tequila bar in the main restaurant, and an adults-only pool near the dolphinarium. Don’t worry- your kids will adore the atmosphere, activities, and excursions. People were having fun everywhere, creating a high-energy atmosphere. It’s a great choice for families that like to move, play and have fun!

 Now Jade

nojrc_aerial

Now Jade is an active family-friendly resort that almost feels like a cruise ship on land. There’s not a ton of greenery, and some of the hallways feel maze-like, but there’s always something to do, a shop to visit, or a restaurant to try. I would highly recommend paying a little extra for the Preferred Club, and you’ll get to enjoy the private lounge, upgraded amenities, a Jacuzzi on your balcony, and more. The best meal of our trip was at Tamarindo, the Mexican restaurant at Jade Now. The guacamole was some of the best I’ve ever had, and the tacos, chile rellenos, tamales, and desserts were delicious too. Make sure you hang out at the quiet adults-only pool located near the Preferred Club rooms- it feels like its own little resort within the larger resort.

Secrets Maroma Beach

semrc_signature

Secrets Maroma Beach is the jewel in AM Resorts’ crown. Earning the AAA Five Diamond award, this luxurious resort has a good combination of activity and relaxation, and is the top choice for a honeymoon. I’ve stayed here before- the service is impeccable and the restaurants are amazing (to the point I tried foods I normally don’t eat- and liked them). This resort is simply gorgeous. It has an artistic elegance, but without feeling pretentious. I would recommend getting a swim-out room if you want a more private pool experience, since the main pools are centrally located and very active.

Secrets Capri Riviera Cancun

secrc_aerial

Every room at Secrets Capri is considered Preferred Club- so you know you’ll be spoiled from the moment you arrive. This AAA Four Diamond resort is gorgeous, luxuriously combining European styling with Mexican accents. Overall, the resort was fairly quiet with people mostly sunbathing or swimming. It only has one large central common area, where the pool is, but it didn’t feel crowded at all. The main building felt a little like a mall, and there isn’t much greenery, so it’s not for everyone. But, if you want to stay at a gorgeous resort and be spoiled by amazing food and service, Secrets Capri is your choice.

Sunscape Sabor Cozumel

SUSCZ_MainPool_2

First, Cozumel is an island off the coast near Cancun- so you either fly directly there or take a 45 minute ferry ride. It’s worth it, I promise. We were all so surprised by this resort. Sunscape is the family-friendly “value” brand in the AM Resorts lineup- so we weren’t expecting much, but we were blown away. The resort had a surprisingly sophisticated Caribbean feel. Simple white buildings with a balcony for every room, wood accents and railing, surrounded by gorgeous lush greenery. It hugs the beach, stretching out lengthwise towards Secrets Aura Cozumel next door. One big plus about this resort- even though it’s considered a value brand, it shares the spa and a few other facilities with Secrets next door. It only has 3 restaurants and 1 buffet- but the food was delicious so I wouldn’t let that deter you. Since it’s on Cozumel, obviously Scuba diving is a huge activity, but they have tons of other activities including snorkeling, bike tours around the island, volleyball, yoga, watersports, etc. This resort is a value in that you get way more than you expect for your money! Skip the other value resorts and go straight for Sunscape Sabor Cozumel.

Secrets Aura Cozumel

V001

Just when I had decided that I wanted to stay at the Sunscape next door, we saw Secrets Aura Cozumel, and now I can’t decide! It was gorgeous too, but obviously more luxurious and for adults-only. The buildings were simple, sophisticated, and modern with tons of gorgeous green landscaping tucked everywhere. You also get to enjoy all the facilities at Sunscape next door, but Sunscape guests cannot visit Secrets. The swim-out rooms were amazing, and you could actually swim out into one of the main pools. Did I mention there’s a waterslide? It’s not huge, but I really love waterslides, so that got me excited at an adults-only resort. I loved that most of the balconies had glass railing so the view isn’t blocked, and I loved how laid-back the resort felt. Obviously, if you’re a Scuba diver, this is a great option- but you should check it out even if you’re not. It’s a perfect place to relax, set your watch to island time, and escape the world.

A Review of Couples Swept Away

Jeff Herron Photography, Inc.

Imagine meandering through lush tropical gardens, relaxing on a pristine beach by day, and being serenaded by a symphony of tree frogs and crickets by night. Every room has a sort of understated elegance, with terra cotta floors and natural wood furniture accented with hand-picked authentic Jamaican accents and artwork. This is Couples Swept Away- a romantic and relaxing retreat in Negril, Jamaica.

I was lucky enough to stay here for 3 nights- and it made a big impression. Upon arrival, I immediately fell in love with the resort’s design and décor. No oversized imported marble entrances or faux-European styling- this resort doesn’t need it. Instead, a simple open-air lobby with tall ceilings accented with bamboo trim, gorgeous local artwork, and classy Caribbean colors makes you feel at home. Its style seems effortlessly elegant- highlighting and reflecting the natural beauty of the island. If you’re already in paradise, you don’t need to dress it up- and Couples Resorts has mastered this conscious restraint. Jamaica is the star of this resort, and it shines.

Jamaica’s natural beauty comes through again in the lush tropical gardens that surround the lobby and line the paths throughout the resort. I’ve never understood why other resorts import plants- and this property proves it’s unnecessary. The effortless elegance continues with the plants themselves taking center stage instead of the landscape design. The gardens are quite tall and prevent you from seeing the whole resort at once, creating an intimate atmosphere. There’s always a private place for a romantic moment, and it’s easy to pretend that it’s just the two of you in a secluded jungle hideaway. The way the paths twist and turn take a day or two to get used to, but once you start noticing the landmarks, finding your room becomes easier. If you have troubles like we did, just ask. There’s always someone available who will gladly point you in the right direction.

05_Swept_Away_Beach

Walking down the paths, you catch a glimpse of the ocean through the foliage, and as you get closer, the gardens open up to reveal the clean sand and crystal clear blue water. The ocean is so clear, my husband lost his wedding ring in chest-deep water, and found it in 2 minutes. It’s a must-see for beach lovers. On either side, Negril’s famous 7 mile beach curves out towards the ocean, giving you great panoramic views…which are their best at sunset. Since the beach faces west, you have a front-row seat to one of the best sunsets you will see in your life. It would be easy to spend the whole day relaxing on the beach, playing in the water, and then enjoying the sunset.

garden-verandah-suite

The rooms at Couples Swept Away are simple yet comfortable, with everything you need and nothing you don’t. We stayed in the Garden Verandah Suite, located in a building on the back side of the resort near Norman Manley Boulevard. We could hear some sounds from the road, but nothing outrageous and the room was worth it. Timeless terra cotta floors and island cedar furniture accent the white walls and linens, again, letting the beauty of the natural materials shine through. Since the rooms are neutral in color, your gaze is drawn outside to the beautiful green gardens, once again putting the spotlight on the beauty of Jamaica. The large balcony further allowed you to enjoy the outdoors, with space to lounge and relax. We loved sitting on the balcony at night, relaxing to the sounds of tree frogs and crickets in the gardens below.

I’m a foodie, and I was impressed by the offerings at Couples Swept Away. We tried 5 out of the 6 restaurants, only running out of time for the vegetarian/pescatarian Seagrape Café. I loved the incorporation of local ingredients into the meals, once again spotlighting Jamaica’s natural resources and culture. My grandmother was from Jamaica, so I’m usually disappointed by the lack of local cuisine at resorts, and the low quality. Not at Couples! At every meal, The Palms buffet featured a few delicious Jamaican dishes, giving guests am authentic taste of the island. At Patois Patio, the meals featured Caribbean ingredients and cooking styles. Cabana Grill had jerk chicken and patties among the other snacks. My favorite restaurant, Lemon Grass, even managed to incorporate local ingredients into their amazing Asian-fusion dishes. The only restaurant we weren’t thrilled about was Feathers, the signature gourmet restaurant. Most of the food was under-seasoned and rather boring- but I’ve heard great things from other people, so it may have just been a bad day. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with consistently good food and how Jamaica’s cuisine was presented.

Since we were only there for 3 days, we didn’t take advantage of the activities, 10-acre sports complex, or free excursions- but we should have! We did tour the sports complex- and it is impressive! It’s on the other side of Norman Manley Blvd, but don’t let that scare you. There’s a crossing guard to help you get there- and it’s completely worth the very short 2 minute walk. Tennis, squash, racquetball, weight training, aerobics, swimming, basketball, a running track and more are offered at the sports complex! You can work on your fitness or your tan- it’s up to you! It REALLY is worth checking out, even if you don’t plan on doing any activities there. Seeing the sports complex for yourself might just change your mind! For watersports, go to the beach and you can kayak, snorkel, paddle board, wind surf, sail, or get introduced to scuba diving. If you want to venture off the resort, then take advantage of the included excursions- Margaritaville, golf, a sunset catamaran cruise, a shopping tour, glass-bottom boat tour, and a shuttle to the famous Rick’s Café. Although we didn’t take advantage of the activities, I did learn one thing- If you get bored at Couples Swept Away, it’s your own fault!!

Overall- I would gladly go back to Couples Swept Away. The staff were friendly and even took the time to learn our names. The food was delicious. The atmosphere was relaxing and authentic. There’s not much more to ask for!

A few tips:

  • If you want to try it, make reservations for Feathers restaurant ASAP after check-in.
  • Also sign up for the catamaran cruise ASAP, because the cruise books up fast.
  • This area of Jamaica, Negril, is all about the beach and the crystal clear water.
  • If you’re a pool lover, this resort only has 2 small pools and 1 large lap pool.
  • Make sure you sign up for the complimentary excursions to get the most out of your Couples all inclusive vacation.
  • Make sure you plan your time around enjoying the incredible sunsets.
  • Have breakfast in bed one day (at least).
  • Golfers: You have to sign up the day before. It’s not a long course, but there’s a lot of uphill, downhill, wind, and punishing rough. Don’t forget carts, clubs and caddies are extra.
  • Sunscreen!
  • Garden View rooms should normally expect to hear some road noise.

3 Must-See Mayan Ruins Near Cancun & Riviera Maya

You’ve probably heard of Chichen Itza- but did you know there are two other major Mayan ruins you can tour close by?? The ancient cities of Chichen Itza, Tulum, and Coba are unique and amazing examples of Mayan ingenuity. These three archeological sites each give you a different perspective into the Mayan empire and its mastery of mathematics, astronomy, and architecture.

Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza means “At the mouth of the well of the Itza”, and is named for one of the natural wells, or cenotes, that dot the area. This ancient Mayan city is the 2nd most visited archeological site in Mexico with 1.2 million visitors per year, and was named one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. Of the three Mayan archeological sites near Cancun, Chichen Itza is the most restored- large areas have been cleared and leveled, and several structures have been excavated and restored to their former glory.

When someone says “Chichen Itza”, you probably picture the iconic step-pyramid, but that is only one small structure in what was one of the largest Mayan cities in its time. The famous step pyramid is called both El Castillo (The Castle) and the Temple of Kukulkan (a Mayan god), and helps illustrate the Maya’s deep understanding of astronomy and time. Standing at 98 feet tall,  El Castillo has 365 total steps- one for every day of the year. Most impressively, on the Spring and Autumn equinoxes, the sun casts a shadow that resembles a snake slithering down the staircase, which represents the serpent diety that the pyramid is named for- Kukulkan.  Chichen Itza also contains 13 ball courts, 1 skull platform (yep- they displayed human skulls), a steam bath, observatory, the Temple of the Warriors, several other major structures and pyramids, and 2 cenotes. At least one of these cenotes, the Cenote Sagrado (Sacred Cenote), was used for human sacrifices. Over 120 Men, women, and children were painted with a long-lasting pigment, now called Maya Blue, and thrown into the cenote. So much of this pigment was used that scientists have found a 14-foot thick layer of blue goop at the bottom- along with human remains, pottery, weapons, gold, turquoise, and copper. You can tour and swim these cenotes- just remember what (and who) is beneath you! Chichen Itza is a great location if you don’t mind crowds and want to see a (mostly) rebuilt Mayan city.

Tulum-Seaside-2010

Tulum is a walled city that sits atop cliffs above the Caribbean Sea. It is the 3rd most visited archeological site in Mexico. The name Tulum means “wall” in the Yucatan language, and it was given by explorers in the 1800s. Because of the protective wall that surrounds the city, it is one of the best preserved Maya coastal cities today.

The Maya didn’t actually use the name Tulum- they called the city Zama, meaning “dawn”, because it faced the eastern sunrise. It is believed to be one of the last cities inhabited and built by Mayas, and it even survived 7 years after the Spanish began their occupation of Mexico. There are three major structures at Tulum- the main structure El Castillo (yes, another one), the Temple of the Frescoes (also used as an observatory) and the Temple of the Descending God. It is believed that El Castillo served as a beacon for canoes to navigate through the barrier reef to the small beach below for trade. Tulum was a major seaport for the neighboring towns of Chichen Itza and Coba, and they traded with people from as far away as Guatemala. If you visit Tulum, make sure to go down to the beach to get the perspective of those who arrived by canoe- the castle on a cliff is a beautiful sight!

Tours-Cancun-Coba

Coba was a large agricultural city with approximately 50,000 inhabitants in its heyday- but little else is known. Coba means “waters stirred by wind”, and was probably named after the two lagoons it is located near. Of the 6500 structures estimated to be in the ancient city, only 2% have been excavated- making it by far the least excavated and least restored of the three archeological sites. Unlike Chichen Itza, Coba has not been cleared and is still surrounded by the jungles of the Yucatan. As you walk on these jungle paths, you can spot birds, butterflies, and the occasional spider monkey among the trees. Looking through the jungle you’ll see what look like hills- but these are actually unexcavated buildings covered in plant growth.

Coba has several pyramids, but the tallest is Nahoch Muul. At 138 feet high, this is the tallest pyramid on the Yucatan, and the 2nd highest in the Mayan world. This is the only pyramid you can still climb, but it’s unsure how much longer that will be allowed. One of the most impressive finds at Coba are the sacbeob, or “white roads”. These are a series of elevated stone and plaster roads that radiate out from the central temple towards other Mayan towns and ruins. The longest of the roads is 62 miles! Parts of the roads have been restored, but most are covered in overgrowth. Since Coba is spread out over a larger area, you can rent bikes or hike around the structures- either way, exploring the jungle ruins is an adventure worth experiencing. If you love Indiana Jones, this is the site for you!

All three are worth visiting, as they each offer such a different experience. Whether you choose the more “touristy” Chichen Itza, the seaside Tulum, or the jungles of Coba, you’ll have an educational adventure that you’ll never forget. Make sure to dress comfortably, bring a bathing suit and bug spray, and to experience some local culture!
