What should I do before I contact a travel agent?

So, you’re planning an all-inclusive vacation or honeymoon and you’re considering using a travel agent… but it’s your first time and you’re not sure what to do! Is it best to do a little research before getting started, or should you jump in and call a travel agency? I asked a few of our agents, and this is the advice they gave.

1)      Have an idea of when you want to go. Having travel dates in mind helps us price your resort options accurately. Since travel package rates vary by date, we can’t give estimates- we have to re-price your package for every new date. We are more than happy to do this, but it’s easier to tweak the travel days a little and find your best price if we know the month and year you want to go! In our ideal world, you would know the exact dates you want to travel- but we understand that’s not realistic for everyone. Just be as specific as you can, whether it’s the season, month, or week you want to travel. If your dates are completely flexible, and you’re more concerned about budget- just let us know! There are times of the year that are cheaper to travel, and we are happy to advise how to get the best price!

2)      Do (a little) homework. If you’re an experienced traveler, you can probably skip this step. If you’re not very experienced, then think about what you want out of this vacation,  where you might you want to go, and price a few options on our website to get an idea of the cost. Talk to your friends to see where they’ve been, or just spend 10 minutes on Google to get an idea of where you do (or definitely don’t) want to go. Even just browsing through Pinterest can help you visualize what you want- it may even make you realize you’d rather go to a kid-friendly resort with a waterslide than an adults-only property. The more you narrow it down, the better we can advise you! Even if you just want a beautiful beach and a balcony with a Jacuzzi- that allows us to better tailor our suggestions to what you want, which makes it more likely we’ll find your perfect resort.  If budget is an issue, look at more affordable locations like Cancun and Jamaica. A decent all-inclusive resort vacation in Cancun is going to cost you at least $2000 for 4 nights (I priced the Riu Palace Las Americas for 6/13-6/17/14 and it came to $1964). We don’t want your jaw to drop when we tell you the prices- so it’s best that you have realistic expectations of the costs before we start.

3)      Consider insurance. I know, I know- you probably think it’s a scam that we make tons of money from, but that couldn’t be further from the truth! I won’t lie, we do make a few dollars, but it’s not significant- the insurance benefits you more than us. At Honeymoons, Inc., our preferred insurance allows you to literally cancel your trip for any reason, even a bad hair day, and get your money back (except the cost of the insurance, of course). The hotels’ and airlines’ cancellation policies aren’t very lenient… even if you have a medical emergency that prevents your trip, you can still lose the money you paid for your vacation- through no fault of your own! We don’t have control in these situations, which is why we encourage insurance- if something does go wrong, you get your money back. Period. No fighting or spending hours on the phone trying to convince someone to refund your money- you just get it back. The insurance we provide also gives some coverage while you’re on your trip, like if you lose your baggage or have a medical issue. With so many things that can go wrong in life (and travel), it’s a small price to pay for peace of mind.

We are here to help you in any way we can- so feel free to jump in and call us without following the list above! We will still provide great service and will do our best to find you a great resort. In love, you have to know yourself before you can find your soulmate, and in travel, spending a little time to figure out what you want makes it more likely we’ll find the resort of your dreams.
